Mostar Old Town Boat Ride — Stari Most from the Neretva

Quick answer

Electric boat ride on the Neretva river under Stari Most. Routes, timing, prices, and the unique view of the Old Bridge from below.

Mostar’s most underrated experience — and the one most tour groups skip — is the electric boat ride on the Neretva river. You see Stari Most from below, the Old Town from the water, and the riverbank cafés that look like a different city from this angle.

We run our boat tours in partnership with local operators, but you can also book direct on the riverbank. Here’s everything to know.

What you actually do

A small electric boat (silent, no fuel smell) takes 8–12 passengers from a dock just downstream of Stari Most. The standard route:

  1. Push off from the dock (eastern bank, Old Town side)
  2. Slow drift upstream toward the bridge
  3. Pass directly under Stari Most — this is the moment everyone takes photos
  4. Continue upstream another 200 meters past the Crooked Bridge
  5. Turn around, drift back, dock at the start

Total time: 30 minutes for the standard tour. Extended 1-hour versions add a downstream loop including views of the Karadjozbeg Mosque from the water and explanation of the still-bullet-marked buildings on the eastern bank.

When boats run

Season

April through October for daily operation. Some operators run November–March on dry, mild days but it’s weather-dependent.

Hours

  • Most boats start at 10:00
  • Last departure typically 18:30 (April–June) or 20:30 (July/August golden hour)
  • Sunset cruises run May–September — best photographed slot

Frequency

  • April/October: hourly departures
  • May/September: every 30–45 minutes
  • June–August: every 20–30 minutes (peak season, sometimes need to queue)

Prices (2026)

  • Standard 30-min: €8 per adult, €4 kids 4–12, free under 4
  • Extended 1-hour: €15 per adult, €8 kids
  • Sunset cruise (90 min): €18 per adult, €10 kids
  • Private boat (up to 8): €60–80 for 30 min

Cash (KM or EUR) preferred, some operators take card. Tickets bought on the dock, not in advance — though calling ahead during high season prevents waiting.

How to find the dock

The main dock is on the eastern bank (Old Town side), about 100 meters downstream from Stari Most. Walk down the stone steps from Coppersmith Street and you’ll see the boats lined up.

A second dock exists on the western bank (less touristy, sometimes shorter wait). Walk under the bridge and follow the steps down.

What you’ll see from the water

This is what makes the boat tour worth it — angles you can’t get any other way:

  • Stari Most from directly below — the underside of the arch, the seams between the limestone blocks. You can see how the bridge defies physics
  • The Old Bazaar from water level — Coppersmith Street rises straight up from the riverbank, crowded with little workshops and cafes
  • Karadjozbeg Mosque with the minaret reflected in the water (depending on light)
  • War-era damage still visible on some eastern-bank buildings — your boat operator usually points these out
  • The spring source of the Radobolja stream where it joins the Neretva (small waterfall near Šadrvan restaurant)
  • Divers from below — if a jump happens during your ride. Most boat tours don’t actively wait for jumps but if one occurs you’ll see it

Best time of day

Morning (10:00–12:00)

Cool, clear, fewer tour groups. Best for photos with even lighting. Most relaxing.

Late afternoon (16:00–18:00)

Warm light, good photography. Bridge gets warm tones from the lowering sun.

Sunset (1 hour before)

The best photographed slot. Bridge glows golden, water reflects sky colors. Most popular — book the sunset cruise variant.

Avoid

Midday in July/August — sun is harsh, water reflections bright, and the boats themselves can heat up.

Combine with other Mostar experiences

The boat tour is short (30 min), so it pairs well with:

  • Walking Tour + Boat: our Mostar Walking Tour ends near the dock — add 30 minutes for the boat. Total: 2.5 hours
  • Cooking Class + Boat: finish the Cooking Class, eat your meal, then sunset boat ride
  • Day Trip + Boat: add a 30-min boat ride to the start or end of any Mostar visit

We can build a custom Mostar day combining walking tour + boat + sunset dinner — message us at +387 61 209 388 for pricing.

What to bring

  • Camera or phone with wide-angle lens (the bridge is BIG when you’re under it)
  • Sunscreen — no shade on the boat
  • Hat or sunglasses — water reflects glare
  • Light jacket for evening cruises (river breeze is cooler than air)
  • Cash for tickets

A note on environmental impact

The boats are electric (battery-powered) since 2022 — much quieter and cleaner than the previous gasoline boats. The Neretva is a sensitive ecosystem and the change has noticeably improved water and air quality on the river. Stick with electric operators.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Mostar boat tour?

Standard ride is 30 minutes. Extended versions (1 hour) include a stop downstream and explanation of the war-era buildings along the riverbank.

Is it safe to swim in the Neretva?

Locals swim in calmer sections (above and below Mostar), but the city stretch has strong currents and is officially not recommended. The boat tour is a safer way to experience the river.

Can I see the divers from the boat?

Sometimes, if a jump happens during your ride. The boat passes directly under Stari Most, so if a diver goes during the 5-minute window you're in that section, you'll see it from below.

Is the boat tour wheelchair accessible?

The boats themselves have steps to board. Some operators have a wheelchair-friendly dock — call ahead to confirm. Those with mobility limitations may find the dock challenging.
