Quick answer

Half-day via ferrata climb in the Buna canyon above Blagaj — 500 m of cable, 150 m elevation, A/B difficulty, paired with a guided visit to the 16th-century Tekija dervish monastery and the Stari Grad Blagaj fortress on the descent. €60 / person including certified guide, full safety kit, round-trip transfer from Mostar Old Town and post-climb photos. The only Mostar-area via ferrata that runs year-round. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. We confirm availability on WhatsApp before any payment.

What you'll experience

Climb the Buna canyon. End the morning at the Tekija.

Via Ferrata Vulin Potok is the half-day cultural-and-adventure combo of the three Mostar-area iron paths — 500 metres of cable along the Buna canyon above Blagaj, paired with a guided visit to the 16th-century Tekija dervish monastery and an optional walk-up to the medieval Stari Grad Herceg Stjepan fortress on the descent. The climb itself is 45 minutes of cable time graded A/B; the surrounding day (climb + Tekija + fortress + Bosnian lunch on the Buna) fills five hours.

The route runs year-round — Vulin Potok is the only Mostar-area via ferrata we operate in winter. The canyon faces southwest, dries fast after rain, and the limestone holds enough heat that December–February dry days are climbable. April through October is the high season; July–August shifts to morning starts to beat the heat.

The climbing partner is Blagaj Climbing — the local club that built and maintains the cable. They run guided climbs in groups of 2–10 with a 1:6 guide ratio, and the same club maintains the 15+ sport-climbing sectors and the climbers’ shelters in the area. We handle the booking, the round-trip transfer from Mostar Old Town, the WhatsApp coordination, and the after-climb photo and lunch handoff; Blagaj Climbing handles the rock and the Tekija context.

You meet the guide at Stari Most parking on the west bank, 3 minutes’ walk from the Old Bridge. 20-minute drive south along the Neretva to the Eco Center Blagaj, 30-minute briefing at the canyon wall trailhead, 45 minutes on the cable. Top out on the cliff terrace, 30-minute descent path past the Stari Grad fortress wall, 30-minute guided Tekija visit, optional fortress walk-up, Bosnian lunch at one of the Buna riverside restaurants. Shuttle back to Mostar Old Town around 13:00 (morning start) or 19:00 (afternoon start).

€60 per person including certified guide, full gear, briefing, round-trip transfer, photos, insurance, and the guided Tekija visit. Tekija entry ticket (€5) and lunch (€12–18) paid on site.

Pair the day with a Mostar Walking Tour the day before to ground the Old Town context, with a Bosnian Cooking Class the same evening for a longer Bosnian day, or with Kravica Waterfall the day after — Kravica is 40 minutes further south on the same road. For the long-read comparison of all three Mostar via ferrata routes see Via Ferrata Mostar — Hum, Fortica & Blagaj routes compared. For the broader Blagaj context see Blagaj travel guide and Blagaj Tekija.

0:00

Pickup at Stari Most parking

Meet at the Stari Most parking on the west bank, 3 min walk from the Old Bridge. The guide drives the operator's van south along the Neretva to Blagaj — 20 minutes, a scenic drive past the Buna Spring outlet.

0:25

Arrive at Eco Center Blagaj

Park at the Eco Center Blagaj, on the left bank of the Buna about 150 metres downstream from the spring. The cable starts behind the Eco Center — a short walk through riverside vegetation to the trailhead at the canyon wall.

0:40

Briefing and gear-up

30-minute safety briefing at the cable start. Carabiner-pass technique drilled on a low practice cable, gear checks one by one, 'one carabiner always attached' rule repeated. Helmet, harness, lanyard.

1:15

Climbing — first half

About 20 minutes on the lower cable. Mostly horizontal traverse along the canyon wall with short B-grade pitches, grade A in feel. The Buna River runs 50 m below the path; the spring outlet is visible upstream. Cable on the right, the river view on the left.

1:35

Mid-route panorama

Short rest at a wider ledge halfway up the route. Photo opportunity — the Buna canyon, the medieval Stari Grad Blagaj fortress on the cliff opposite, the Tekija visible downstream by the spring. The guide explains what you're looking at.

1:50

Climbing — second half

Another 25 minutes on the upper cable. Slightly steeper than the first half, with two short vertical B sections (5–10 m each). The path climbs toward the cliff terrace overlooking the spring. Total cable time: ~45 minutes.

2:35

Top — gear off, hike down

Top out on the cliff terrace above the canyon. Gear off, water break, group photo with the Tekija and the Buna source framed below. 30-minute marked descent path back toward the Tekija — passes below the Stari Grad fortress wall.

3:05

Tekija dervish monastery visit

Guided visit to the Blagaj Tekija, the 16th-century dervish monastery built into the cliff at the source of the Buna. About 30 minutes inside — your guide walks you through the layout, the religious history, and the architecture. Entry ticket (~€5) paid on site.

3:35

Optional Stari Grad fortress add-on

If you're up for one more climb: the medieval Herceg Stjepan fortress on the cliff above the Tekija — a 20-minute uphill walk for the full clifftop view of the canyon. Optional, skip if you're tired.

4:00

Bosnian lunch on the Buna riverside

We drop you at one of the Blagaj riverside restaurants for a Bosnian lunch (Restaurant Vrelo, Restaurant Tekija) — fresh trout from the Buna, ćevapi, salads. Not included in the price; budget ~€12–18 for a substantial meal. Free pickup back to Mostar after lunch.

5:00

Shuttle back to Mostar Old Town

20-minute drive back along the Neretva to Stari Most parking. Drop-off at the same place you started.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How fit do I need to be?

**Modest hill-walking fitness.** The climb is 45 minutes of cable time with two short vertical B sections (5–10 m each) — no overhangs, no sustained C grade. The cumulative day (climb + Tekija + optional fortress + lunch) is about 5 hours with breaks; comparable to a half-day hike. **Compared to Hum** — much easier (Hum is B/C with 60 m of sustained C climbing; Blagaj is A/B with brief B sections). **Compared to Fortica** — similar difficulty, but longer and with the cultural add-ons.

Can children come?

**Minimum age 10** with a parent in the same group. The A/B grading and forgiving canyon geometry make Vulin Potok one of the better family via ferrata routes in the region — short enough that younger climbers stay engaged, varied enough (climb + Tekija + fortress + lunch) that the day feels like an outing rather than a workout. **For ages 8–9** the climb is too physically demanding, but we can route the same day skipping the climb (Tekija + fortress + Buna lunch) as a Blagaj culture half-day on request.

Why does this cost more than Fortica?

**The day is longer and the package wider.** Fortica is a 2–3-hour climb. Blagaj is 4–5 hours with a 20-minute transfer each way, a 30-minute guided Tekija visit, an optional fortress walk-up, and a more substantial guide-led day. **Same hourly value** — what you're paying for is the guided cultural overlay on top of the climb. **For climbing-only at lower price** book Fortica; **for the full Blagaj half-day** book this.

Is it really year-round?

**Yes — Vulin Potok is the only Mostar-area via ferrata we run year-round.** The canyon is southwest-facing, dries fast after rain, and the limestone holds heat enough that winter days are climbable on dry weeks. **In December–February** we run on dry-weather weekends with a week of advance notice; the partner operator confirms the cable condition before each session. **In summer** July–August we shift to morning starts (08:00) to beat the heat. **In rain**: light rain OK; moderate-to-heavy rain cancels.

What's the Tekija visit like?

**30 minutes inside the monastery with your guide explaining the history.** The Tekija is a 16th-century dervish monastery built into the cliff at the source of the Buna — one of the most-photographed buildings in Bosnia, and an active religious site (sema ceremonies still held). **Entry**: a small ticket (~€5) paid on site; modest dress required (shoulders covered, long skirt or loose trousers — wraps available at the entrance if needed). **Photos**: allowed in the exterior and the entrance hall, restricted in the prayer rooms. **Your guide** is briefed on the religious context and respectful of active worship — different guide style from a pure adventure guide.

Can I combine this with a longer Blagaj day?

**Yes — this is the most common Blagaj day-tour build.** Climb + Tekija + fortress + Buna lunch fills a comfortable half-day. **Add-ons we can route**: morning climb + afternoon stop at the Buna Spring outlet for a boat ride into the cave (€8 / person, paid on site), or a Blagaj Bosnian cooking class at one of the riverside restaurants in the evening. **Or chain with Mostar Old Town** — climb morning, drop you at Stari Most parking by 14:00, you do the Old Town walking tour in the afternoon. Message us at booking with your wider day plan.

How does Blagaj compare to GetYourGuide's listing?

**Same headline price (€60) as the GetYourGuide Blagaj listing** — we route to the same Blagaj Climbing partner. **What you get booking direct**: WhatsApp line to the actual guide, the option to add the cooking class or boat ride to the same day's quote, and a Tekija visit framed as part of the day rather than tacked on. **The price advantage isn't the headline number — it's the customisation around it**.

How do I book?

**WhatsApp [+387 61 209 388](https://wa.me/38761209388)** with your dates, group size and preferred time slot. We come back within a few hours with availability and either a Monri payment link or bank-transfer details. **Booking notice**: 24 h in low season, 2–3 days in peak July–August, a week in winter (Dec–Feb). **Cancellation**: free up to 24 h before; 50% refund inside 24 h; free reschedule if we cancel for weather.
