Quick answer

Boračko Lake near Konjic — Bosnia's small alpine lake at 380m elevation. Swimming, kayaking, hiking, camping. 1.5 hours from Mostar.

Boračko Lake is the lake locals visit when they want to escape the crowds at Jablanica Lake. Smaller, higher, quieter, surrounded by pine forest — it’s a 90-minute drive from Mostar and worth knowing about if you have 4+ days in the region.

What it is

Boračko (pronounced “bo-RACH-ko”) is a small natural lake formed by glacial scouring during the last ice age. It sits in a forested basin between Mount Visočica (1,994m) and Mount Bjelašnica (2,067m, the 1984 Olympic mountain). The water comes from underground karst springs and is famously clear — visibility 4+ metres.

Unlike Jablanica Lake (artificial, created by 1953 dam), Boračko is fully natural and has the alpine character that goes with that — irregular shoreline, pine forest right to the water’s edge, almost no commercial development.

Why visit

1. Quiet

Maximum 200–300 visitors on the busiest weekend. Most weekdays you’ll be sharing the lake with 30–50 people — Bosnian families, weekend campers, occasional tour groups from Konjic.

2. Genuinely refreshing water

Water temperature in August: ~22°C (vs 25°C+ at Jablanica). Cold enough to feel “Alpine” but not painful. Perfect after a hot Mostar afternoon.

3. Mountain setting

The forested mountains rising from the lake are visible from every angle. Photographers like the golden hour light on the water.

4. Camping options

Camp Boracko Jezero is the main campsite. Tent pitches €5/night, glamping cabins €30-50/night, basic facilities. Not luxury, but comfortable. You can also wild-camp in the surrounding forest (legally tolerated).

What to do

Swimming

Several shore access points. The southwestern beach (signposted) has the easiest entry and a small grass area for towels. No lifeguards — swim at your own risk.

Kayaking

Rental shop at the campsite — €5/hour for a single kayak, €8 for a double. Sit-on-top, no experience needed. The lake is small enough to paddle around in 90 minutes.

Stand-up paddleboarding

Same rental shop, €8/hour. Glassy mornings are perfect for this.

Hiking

  • Lake loop trail — 4 km easy, 90 min, all flat
  • Visočica peak trail — 6 hours round trip, serious hike, 1,500m elevation gain
  • Bjelašnica connection — full-day connection to the Olympic mountain

Fishing

Trout fishing allowed with permit (€5/day from the campsite). Catch and release encouraged.

Mountain biking

The Mount Bjelašnica trails start near the lake. Rental at campsite €15/day. Suitable for intermediate riders.

How to get there

By car (best option)

  • From Mostar: 90 km, 1.5 hours via M17 → Konjic → eastward signposted “Boračko jezero”
  • From Sarajevo: 80 km, 1.5 hours via Bjelašnica road
  • Free parking at the lake

By bus

Not practical. Closest bus is Konjic. From Konjic, taxi €20–30 one-way to the lake. No public transport beyond.

By tour

We don’t run group tours to Boračko Lake (too niche), but offer private transfers from Mostar to it. €140 vehicle for round-trip with 5 hours at the lake — perfect for a quiet day. WhatsApp +387 61 209 388.

When to visit

Best months

  • June–July — swimming peak, all activities running, comfortable weather
  • September — quiet, water still warm, autumn light beautiful
  • October–November — cold but spectacular, no swimming, hiking only

Watch out

  • August weekends — the only crowded period (Bosnians on summer holiday)
  • November–April — lake too cold for swimming, road may be snowy

Combine with

Day trip from Mostar

  • Boračko Lake + Konjic Old Town (45 min drive) + ARK D-0 bunker (Konjic) — full day

Multi-day trip

  • Day 1: Mostar → Konjic → ARK D-0 → Konjic Old Bridge
  • Day 2: Boračko Lake → swimming + hike + lunch → continue to Sarajevo

Practical tips

  • Cash: kayak rental, campsite, food stalls all cash-only
  • Bring food — limited dining options, mostly basic Bosnian fare at the campsite
  • Sunscreen essential — mountain altitude amplifies UV
  • Bug spray — mosquitoes around the lake at dusk
  • Phone signal patchy — download offline maps before going
  • Toilets at campsite only
