Kočuša vs Kravica 2026 — Which Trebizat Waterfall Should You Visit?

Quick answer

Kočuša vs Kravica — two waterfalls on the same Trebizat River, 15 min apart. Honest comparison: scale, swim, crowds, restaurants, photography. Which fits which traveler.

Quick answer: Visit both — the €10 Kravica ticket includes Kočuša access, and they’re 15 minutes apart. Kravica is the famous waterfall (25m tall, swim platform, busy); Kočuša is the quiet sister (5m tall, watermills, free, riverside restaurants). For swimming: only Kravica works. For photography + atmosphere: Kočuša wins. Combine in one half-day from Mostar: 90 min Kravica swim + 15 min drive + 30 min Kočuša + lunch = 5h round-trip.

For full Kravica details see Kravica Waterfall pillar. For both compared see Trebizat River Waterfalls.

What you don’t realise about Kočuša

  • Most group tours skip it — standard packages don’t include it
  • Watermills along the river are still operating in some cases
  • Riverside restaurants have terraces directly over the water (not Kravica’s gate-level terrace setup)
  • Free entry standalone — you don’t even need the Kravica ticket
  • 15 minutes from Kravica — easy add-on if self-driving

Common mistakes

  1. Visiting only Kravica without knowing Kočuša exists — most common miss.
  2. Trying to walk between the two — drive 15 min instead.
  3. Expecting Kočuša to have Kravica-level facilities — rustic, not managed.
  4. Trying to swim at Kočuša — wading only.
  5. Visiting Kočuša in winter — restaurants mostly closed.
  6. Skipping the watermills — Kočuša’s unique feature.
  7. Group tour without Kočuša — book a private transfer or self-drive to add it.

Visit on a guided tour

Our standard Kravica Waterfall day tour from Mostar doesn’t include Kočuša — the standard 8-hour route prioritises Mostar + Blagaj + Bunski Kanali + Kravica + Pocitelj over the Kočuša detour. For Kočuša-included routing: our private transfers from Mostar can custom-add Kočuša for €30–50 add-on. WhatsApp +387 61 209 388.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I visit Kočuša or Kravica?

**Visit both — the €10 Kravica ticket includes Kočuša access**, they're 15 minutes apart. Most travellers don't realise this and skip Kočuša. **For 'one only' choice**: **Kravica** — it's the famous waterfall, has the swim platform, the on-site facilities, and the iconic 100-metre travertine cliff. **Kočuša** is the bonus quieter sister 10 km north — smaller (5m drop), quieter, with traditional stone watermills and riverside restaurants. **Visit both as half-day**: 90 min Kravica + 30–45 min Kočuša + drive between = 5h total. **Visit Kravica only**: 2–3 hours.

What's the difference between Kočuša and Kravica?

**Same river, different scale + atmosphere.** **Kravica**: 25m tall × 100m wide travertine cliff, large swim pool, swim platform with lifeguards, three on-site restaurants, mini-train shuttle, paid entry €10, often busy in summer. **Kočuša**: 5m tall × 50m wide travertine sill, small wading pool (rocky), no swim platform, 2–3 riverside restaurants with terraces over the water, traditional stone watermills (mlinice) along the river, free entry, almost always quiet. **Same Trebizat River**: it's one of the river's 9 underground reappearances; the same water powers both.

Can I swim at Kočuša?

**Wading only — not proper swimming.** Kočuša's pool is shallow + rocky underfoot. **For real swimming**: Kravica is the answer (designated swim zone, lifeguards, 1.5m+ depth, June–September water 16–20°C). **Kočuša works for**: kids paddling in the shallows (water shoes mandatory), photo time, picnic by the river. **Don't try to swim under Kočuša falls**: it's shallow, rocky, and not designed for it. **Don't try to swim under Kravica falls either**: that's been barred since 2018 due to falling-rock risk; swim in the marked Kravica swim zone instead.

What's the entry difference?

**Kravica €10 entry** (free Nov–Mar). **Kočuša free entry** standalone, **OR included in your Kravica ticket** if you visit both same day. **Most travellers don't realise** — you can show your Kravica ticket at the small Kočuša parking attendant if questioned (rarely happens — it's mostly unmonitored). **Parking**: free at Kočuša (small lot near the falls), 3 KM/hour at Kravica. **Cash only at Kravica gate**; nothing to pay at Kočuša unless you visit a restaurant. **Bring small KM cash** for Kravica entry + parking.

Where is Kočuša exactly?

**Veljaci village, ~10 km north of Kravica, ~10 km south of Ljubuški.** GPS approximately **43.2056°N, 17.6147°E**. **Drive from Kravica**: 15–20 minutes via local roads. **Drive from Mostar direct**: ~50 km / 1 hour. **From Pocitelj**: 35 km / 40 minutes. The falls are right next to the road — no descent path, just walk to the riverbank. **Park in the small lot near the falls** or by the riverside restaurants. The closest town is Ljubuški; nearest large town is Capljina (12 km from Kravica).

What about the watermills at Kočuša?

**Several traditional stone watermills (mlinice) along the river** — they date from Ottoman period and were the village's economic lifeline before electricity. **Some still operating**: grinding flour at low capacity, partly tourist demonstration, partly real production. **Walk along the river** from the falls to see them — informal access, friendly mill owners sometimes offer brief tours if you express interest. **Photography goldmine**: the watermill + waterfall + traditional stone backdrop is the standout shot Kočuša offers that Kravica doesn't. **Best photographed**: late afternoon golden hour.

Are the restaurants different at each?

**Kravica restaurants** (3 on-site at the gate-area plateau): traditional Bosnian, grilled meats, river trout, mains €15–25. Larger volume, busier, mid-range pricing. **Kočuša restaurants** (2–3 riverside): smaller, more authentic-locals' atmosphere, terraces directly over the water, cash only, mains €10–18 (slightly cheaper). **Bosnian trout (pastrmka)** at both — Kočuša versions are usually fresher because the restaurants are smaller. **Kočuša is the better lunch atmosphere** for foodies; Kravica is the bigger meal-volume venue. **Combine**: lunch at Kočuša after morning Kravica swim is the sweet spot.

Most common Trebizat-waterfall mistakes?

(1) **Visiting only Kravica and not knowing Kočuša exists** — most common miss. (2) **Trying to walk between the two** — 10 km on river paths is impractical; drive 15 min instead. (3) **Expecting Kočuša to have Kravica-level facilities** — rustic, not managed. (4) **Trying to swim at Kočuša** — water shallow + rocky; for swimming go to Kravica. (5) **Visiting Kočuša in winter expecting open restaurants** — most close November–March. (6) **Skipping the watermills** — they're Kočuša's standout feature. (7) **Booking a group tour expecting Kočuša included** — most don't; ask explicitly when booking, or self-drive to add it.
