What you'll experience

Two hundred metres of cable. Bosnia's most-photographed cliff.

Via Ferrata Fortica is the short scenic iron path of Mostar — 200 metres of cable, 80 metres of elevation, one suspension bridge, and a finish on the cliff terrace beside the free Fortica Sky Walk glass platform. Two hours of total tour time, 30 minutes of which is actual climbing, the rest split between transfer from Old Town, briefing, gear-up, and the Sky Walk visit at the end.

The route is graded A/B with one C detail. Most of the climbing is horizontal traverse along the cliff edge — grade A in technique, B in exposure (the drop below is real, but the footing is good). One short vertical section near the end is grade C — about 10 metres where the cliff steepens and steel rungs replace footholds. The guide spots through that section. Fortica is the friendliest Mostar route for first-time-with-heights climbers — the cable starts on a forgiving cliff terrace and you can see the path back to the gate the whole time.

The climbing partner is ASPK Neretva or a licensed guide from the same Mostar climbing community — local climbers who maintain the cable and the bolted anchors. We handle the booking, the WhatsApp line, the round-trip shuttle from Old Town, and the after-climb photo handoff; they handle the rock.

You meet the guide at the Stari Most parking on the west bank, 3 minutes’ walk from the Old Bridge. 15-minute drive up the switchback road in the operator’s van. Gear handed out at the Fortica gate, 30-minute briefing, then onto the cable. Climb 30 minutes, break at the top, walk to the free Sky Walk glass platform for the obligatory shot down onto the Old Town. Shuttle back to Stari Most parking — total trip 2.5 hours.

€50 per person including guide, full gear, briefing, round-trip transfer, photos, insurance and the free Sky Walk visit. Add the zip line for an extra €26 paid at the gate.

Pair the climb with the Sky Walk + Zip Line combo the same day (climb morning, zip line afternoon), with a Mostar Walking Tour in Old Town the day before, or with a sunset Fortica shuttle the same evening to revisit the platform in golden hour. For the long-read comparison of all three Mostar via ferrata routes see Via Ferrata Mostar — Hum, Fortica & Blagaj routes compared.

Itinerary

Your day, stop by stop

Pick a slot

Morning, afternoon or sunset

Three daily windows: 09:00 (cooler limestone, freshest air), 14:00 (paired with Sky Walk lunch), 16:30 sunset (climb finishes as the Old Town picks up golden light — best photo window of the day). Booking notice 24 h in low season, 2–3 days in peak July–August.

0:00

Pickup at Stari Most parking

Meet at the Stari Most parking area, west bank, 3 min walk from the Old Bridge. The guide drives the operator's van up the switchback road — 15 minutes to the Fortica gate. Gear bags ride with the guide; you ride with the view.

0:15

Arrive at Fortica gate

Park at the Fortica adventure-park entrance. Walk past the Sky Walk café area to the via ferrata trailhead — a marked path along the Austro-Hungarian fortress wall. The cable starts at the cliff edge near the swing platform.

0:30

Briefing and gear-up

30-minute safety briefing at the cable start. Carabiner-pass technique drilled on a low practice cable, gear checks one by one, the 'one carabiner always attached' rule repeated until everyone has it. Helmet, harness, lanyard.

1:00

First section — A/B traverse

100 m of mostly horizontal cable along the cliff edge — grade A with B-level exposure (drop below you is real, but the climbing is essentially walking with a hand on the cable). Cable on the right, exposure on the left, the Old Town and Stari Most visible 500 m below.

1:20

Suspension bridge

One bridge on this route — short span with wood-plank floor, double cable handrails. Both carabiners stay on the upper cable. The drop straight down is the cliff face you've been traversing, with the Neretva valley visible through the bridge slats.

1:35

Short C-grade detail

The one harder section — about 10 metres of grade-C climbing where the cliff steepens and steel rungs replace footholds. The guide spots from above. Total time on the C detail is maybe 5 minutes; first-time climbers usually call it the most memorable part of the route.

1:50

Final B section to the top

A short B-grade pitch to the cable's end at the upper cliff terrace. Gear off here, water break, photo session — the platform looks straight down onto the Old Bridge and the Old Town.

2:10

Sky Walk visit (free)

Five-minute walk to the Fortica Sky Walk glass platform. The Sky Walk itself is free (you've already paid for the climb). 35 m of glass floor, 15 m above the slope, 500 m above the Old Town. Café on site for a coffee or beer while the adrenaline settles.

2:45

Shuttle back to Old Town

Drive back down the switchback road to the Stari Most parking. Drop-off at the same place you started. Total trip: 2.5 hours with a 30-minute Sky Walk add-on, or 2 hours if you skip the Sky Walk.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How fit do I need to be?

**Modest** — Fortica is the easiest of the three Mostar via ferrata routes. About 30 minutes of cable time, mostly horizontal traverse with one short C-grade vertical detail of around 10 metres. If you can hike uphill for 30 minutes without stopping and don't have severe vertigo, you'll be fine. **Compared to Hum** — much easier (Hum is B/C with 60 m of sustained C; Fortica is A/B with one 10 m C detail). **Compared to Blagaj** — about the same difficulty, but shorter.

How does this differ from the Sky Walk + Zip Line combo tour?

Different products. **Sky Walk + Zip Line combo (€42)** is a no-climbing half-day — round-trip shuttle from Old Town, free Sky Walk visit, plus a ticket for Bosnia's longest zip line (570 m + 450 m dual cable). **Via Ferrata Fortica (€50)** is the climbing experience — same hilltop, same shuttle, but you climb the cliff face with a guide and gear instead of zip-lining off it. **Many guests book both** across two days or as a long single day (climb morning, zip line afternoon). Message us if you want the combo quote.

Can children do Fortica?

**Minimum age 10** with a parent in the same group. The route is short enough and easy enough that fit 10–11-year-olds handle it well — the C detail is the only section that needs adult-level coordination, and the guide spots them through it. **For children 8–9**: not recommended on the cable, but they can ride the operator's van up, do the free Sky Walk, and meet you back at the café when you finish. **For climbers 10–17**: parental consent required at booking.

What if I'm scared of heights?

**Fortica is the friendliest Mostar route for first-time-with-heights climbers.** The cable starts on a relatively forgiving cliff terrace (not a sheer face), the suspension bridge is the shortest of the three Mostar routes, and you can see the path back to the gate the whole time — which helps the brain. **The C-grade detail** is the one moment of true exposure; the guide stops to spot you and answers questions before you commit. **If you freeze midway** the guide can downclimb with you back to the gate — Fortica is the only Mostar route where retreat is straightforward at every point.

Can I combine Fortica via ferrata with the zip line same day?

**Yes — most popular two-activity Fortica day.** Climb 09:00–11:00, free Sky Walk visit + café 11:00–12:00, zip line 12:00–13:00, lunch on site or back in Old Town. We hold the zip line slot in the operator's booking system so you don't queue at the gate. **Combined price**: €50 via ferrata + €26 zip line (paid on site at the gate) = €76 total, plus shuttle is bundled. Message us at booking to add the zip line.

When does it run?

**April through October** is our regular window. **Year-round access is technically possible** — Fortica is south-facing and dries fast — but the partner operator runs guided climbs only when weather is reliable. **Winter** (Dec–Feb): on-request, dry-weather weekends only, longer lead time required (a week notice). **In rain**: light rain OK; moderate-to-heavy rain or thunderstorm cancels — wet limestone is slippery and metal cable is a lightning conductor.

What gear do I bring?

**Hiking shoes or trail-running shoes** are mandatory — flat sandals refused at the briefing. Athletic-fit clothes (no long skirts or loose dresses — they catch the carabiners). **Sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen** — the cliff face is south-facing with no shade. **1 L water** in a small daypack (no shoulder bags — they tangle with the lanyard). **Optional**: light gloves of your own if you prefer them to ours, smartphone with strap or zip pocket for photos. **Leave at the hotel**: valuables, single-strap bags, anything you can't afford to drop 500 m onto the Old Town.

How do I book?

**WhatsApp [+387 61 209 388](https://wa.me/38761209388)** with your dates, group size and preferred time slot. We come back within a few hours with availability and either a Monri payment link or bank-transfer details. **Booking notice**: 24 h in low season, 2–3 days in peak July–August. **Cancellation**: free up to 24 h before; 50% refund inside 24 h; free reschedule if we cancel for weather.
