What you'll experience
Three Herzegovina wineries in 6 hours, with proper sommelier context and a full winery lunch in the middle.
The Herzegovina Wine Route covers 22 wineries across 6 municipalities but most international travellers don’t have time to explore them on their own — language barrier, scattered locations, by-appointment-only at most cellars, drink-driving rules. We solved that with a focused 6-hour half-day from your Mostar hotel.
Three wineries: Brkić (the Decanter-decorated benchmark — Žilavka and Blatina specialists) + Carski (the boutique premium with oak-aged Žilavka Reserve) + Nuić (the larger family producer with restaurant on premises for our full Herzegovina lunch).
14 wines tasted across the day, paced with cheese and prosciutto small plates and a full lunch in the middle. Sommelier-guide context: WSET Level 2 minimum, English fluent, can discuss Žilavka’s karst-terroir mineral profile vs other Mediterranean whites, and the 5,000-year Herzegovina wine history.
Max 6 guests for the focused experience. Hotel pickup at 10:00, return by 16:00 (16:30 with optional Pocitelj photo stop). All transport, parking, tolls, tastings, lunch, and the wine-pairing flight included. €120/person.
For our broader Herzegovina wine pillar (the 22-winery route, indigenous grapes, top producers list), see Herzegovina wine pillar guide. For combined wine + cooking class day, see Bosnian cooking class.

FAQ
Frequently asked
Why these three wineries — Brkić, Carski, Nuić?
**Brkić** is the **benchmark Herzegovina winery** — Decanter-decorated, the wine that introduces most international visitors to Žilavka. **Carski** is the **boutique premium tier** — smaller production, oak-aged Žilavka Reserve, the producer that shows what Herzegovina wine can be at the top end. **Nuić** has a **restaurant on premises** so we end the day with a full lunch + wine pairing without driving back to Mostar hungry. The trio covers entry-mid-premium across the day. We've tested 8+ wineries; this is the trio that consistently delivers across all four seasons.
What grapes will I taste?
**Žilavka** (the white) is the focus — you'll taste **3–4 different Žilavka tiers** across the day, from entry-level (€10–12 retail) to oak-aged Reserve (€20–25 retail). The differences are striking: entry-level is mineral-driven and light, Reserve is honey-and-toast with longer finish. **Blatina** (the red) gets 3–4 examples — entry to premium. **Vranac** at one or two stops. **Trnjak** (the rare red) at Nuić if available — only ~2,000 bottles produced annually across the region. Total **14 wines across the day** including the lunch pairing flight.
How much wine will I drink?
**3–4 small tastings (~50 ml each) at each winery = 14 small pours total**. Roughly equivalent to **2 full glasses of wine over 6 hours**, paced across multiple food breaks. **You're never asked to finish a glass** — the spittoon at every winery is genuinely used by the guide. **For tipsy travellers**: tell us at booking and we'll skew tastings smaller. **For wine professionals**: tastings can include barrel samples and library vintages on request (custom premium €180/person). **You're not driving** — the minivan handles all transport.
Is this tour suitable for non-wine-drinkers?
**Honestly: probably not.** The tour is structured around 14 wine tastings + winery lunch with pairing flight. Non-drinkers in the group can join the cellar tours and lunch (Nuić has good non-alcoholic options) but the value is mostly in the tastings. **For mixed groups**: we can split — wine-drinkers do the tour, non-drinkers spend the day in Mostar. **For a designated-driver-style member**: we always have someone in the wine industry who's working not drinking, so they understand and can pace alongside. **For a non-wine-drinker partner of a wine-drinker**: free non-alcoholic pairing (juice, water, cordials) at the winery lunch on request.
What's included in the lunch?
**Full Herzegovina lunch at Nuić** (~90 minutes): prosciutto from a local Stolac producer, **Travnički sheep's-milk cheese**, mediterranean tomato + olive salad, **grilled lamb (Hercegovački janjac)** as the main, and dessert (typically baklava or hurmašice). **Vegetarian alternative** on 24h notice: dolma + cheese plate + grilled aubergine + walnut-stuffed peppers. **Vegan alternative** on 48h notice: dolma + grilled vegetables + bean salad. **5-wine pairing flight** included alongside the meal — Žilavka entry, Žilavka Reserve, Blatina, Vranac, and a sweet wine for dessert.
Can I buy wine at the wineries?
**Absolutely encouraged**, all three wineries sell directly. **Typical bottle prices**: €8–15 entry-level, €15–25 mid-tier, €25–35 premium reserves. **Most travellers buy 3–5 bottles** (€40–80 spend). **Customs/luggage**: most countries allow 1L of duty-free wine import — check your home rules. EU-to-EU is unlimited within reason. **Carrying**: wineries provide bubble-wrap; bring a wine sleeve if flying with hand-luggage. **Shipping**: limited internationally; ask at the winery for a Belgrade or Zagreb importer's contact for larger orders later.
What's the best month for the wine tour?
**May–June and September–early October** are the sweet spots. **September is the absolute peak** — vintage / harvest, open-cellar events at many wineries, mature vintages still pouring, beautiful golden-vine landscape. **April + late October** are quieter shoulders with full availability. **July–August** works but vineyards are dormant-looking from the heat and tastings shift indoors. **November–March**: many smaller wineries close to walk-ins; we run the tour but with fewer cellar walks. **Avoid Vintage Festival week** in mid-September (Čitluk hosts; book accommodation 1+ month ahead).
Can I add the cooking class or other Mostar experiences?
**Yes — common combinations.** **Wine + cooking class same day**: 09:00–12:00 cooking class at Food House Mostar (burek/japrak/dolma/hurmašice) + 13:00 wine tour adapted to start later (we shift pickup to 13:30, end 19:30). Combined €170/person. **Wine + Mostar Old Town**: morning Mostar walk, afternoon wine tour. **Wine + Pocitelj**: standard included add-on. **Wine + Kravica swim** (June–September): not recommended — the swim + wine combo is a long day and the wine tasting palette suffers from the swim. WhatsApp **[+387 61 209 388](https://wa.me/38761209388)** for a custom-routing quote.
What if I have wine allergies or dietary restrictions?
**Sulfite sensitivity**: most wineries on this route use minimal sulfites in their reds (10–30 mg/L vs typical 100–200 mg/L mass-market). Tell us at booking and we steer toward the lower-sulfite options. **Histamine intolerance**: tasting volumes are small enough that most travellers manage; we can prioritise reds over whites if that helps. **Gluten-free**: lunch options can be gluten-free with 24h notice. **Vegan**: lunch with 48h notice. **Pregnancy**: not recommended — the tour is structured around 14 wine tastings; come back when you can taste.
How does this compare to other wine tours in the region?
**Two main competitors**: **iHouse Herzegovina Full Experience** (€70/person, includes Mostar Walking Tour + 1 winery tasting — broader sampling experience but only 1 winery) and **Funky Tours East Herzegovina** (€60–80/person, includes Stolac + 1 winery — broader regional tour). **Our format**: pure wine focus, 3 wineries, no Mostar walk (you do that separately), full pairing lunch, English sommelier-guide. **At €120/person**: more expensive than the broader-tour competitors but **way more wine** and **proper sommelier context**. **For first-time wine-tasters**: iHouse or Funky might be enough. **For travellers wanting the actual Herzegovina wine experience**: this is the focused product.
Is the guide actually a sommelier?
**Our wine-tour guides have either WSET Level 2 (or equivalent) certification or 5+ years professional sommelier work** at Mostar/Sarajevo restaurants. The minimum bar: can answer questions about Žilavka's mineral profile vs Loire Sauvignon, Blatina's tannin structure vs Plavac Mali, Herzegovina's karst terroir, and the regional wine history (Illyrian → Roman → Ottoman → Yugoslav → modern). **For wine professionals**: tell us at booking and we match you with our most-experienced guide who can go deep on technical questions and barrel-sampling discussions. **In Polish/Italian/German**: limited availability, request 7+ days ahead.
What's the cancellation policy?
**Free cancellation up to 48 hours before** the pickup date. Within 48 hours: 50% refund. Within 24 hours: non-refundable except for documented force majeure (medical, weather closure, flight cancellation). **Reschedule for free** if you contact us before pickup and we have availability. **Why the 48-hour window**: wineries pre-book the tasting volume of wine for your group; we don't want to waste it. WhatsApp **[+387 61 209 388](https://wa.me/38761209388)** for any changes.
Most common Herzegovina wine-tour mistakes?
(1) **Driving yourself wine-tasting** — BiH BAC limit is strict (0.03%, lower than US/UK); use a tour or transfer. (2) **Booking 5+ wineries in one day** — palate fatigue; 3 is the sweet spot. (3) **Skipping Žilavka because 'I don't drink white'** — Herzegovina Žilavka isn't generic European white; it's a distinct mineral style worth trying. (4) **Visiting July–August midday** — vineyards dormant, tastings indoors; spring or autumn far better. (5) **Not learning the grape names** — saying 'Žilavka' (ZHEE-lav-ka) and 'Blatina' (BLAH-tee-na) correctly is appreciated. (6) **Showing up hungover from previous-night Mostar** — palate destroyed; reschedule if possible. (7) **Not buying any wine** — most travellers regret not bringing 2-3 bottles home.
